History

Dr Robert Leech - scriptwriter with
Jack Milner - Artistic Director
The original idea for the Lichfield Mysteries started at the beginning of the 1990s and grew into a community project involving hundreds of people and many organisations in and around Lichfield. From the start, the idea was to let anyone and everyone become involved. This meant that it had to be free in order not to exclude anybody from either taking part or watching the plays. For this reason, we wish to thank our many sponsors and those who have donated generously to support The Lichfield Mysteries over the years. Without their help, The Lichfield Mysteries could not take place.

After the initial idea, a committee was set up to gather people and groups together and raise the money to stage the first cycle of the Lichfield Mysteries. Eventually, the scripts and music were ready and the performing groups and costumes were assembled. The first cycle of The Lichfield Mysteries was performed over the May Bank Holiday weekend on the 1st and 2nd May 1994. Since the original performance, the cycle was performed again over a very wet weekend in 1997, when performances due to their outdoor locations had to be severely curtailed on the second day, with a limited performance indoors in the Guild Hall. Rather better weather welcomed the Mysteries in 2000, although one of the stages had been relocated inside Lichfield Cathedral after the experiences of 1997.

The move indoors in 2000 into Lichfield Cathedral allowed new ideas to be pursued with two stages and the gallery used for a very spectacular presentation of Doomsday, with one stage representing Heaven and the second stage representing Hell. This was complemented with a rock band in "Hell" and organ music in "Heaven" with God and the Angels surveying the scene from the Gallery above "Heaven".

If you want to read more about the history of the Lichfield Mysteries, go to the "Memories" page in the "People" section, which gives some accounts from behind the scenes of the original performances.
